Ben would go. It’s a message I saw displayed repeatedly around Newport Beach when I visited a week ago. A phrase originally coined in tribute to Eddie Aikau, a Hawaiian lifeguard and surfer who died in 1978 trying to rescue his crew when the boat they were on capsized, refers this time to 32-year-old Ben Carlson. Sadly, Carlson will now always be remembered as the first lifeguard in Newport Beach history to die in the line of duty. I took this shot with my Polaroid SX-70 at the entrance to the Newport Beach Lifeguard Headquarters a few days after the tragedy.
