Taking a little break from the junkyard, here’s a shot of Sedona at golden hour. It looks peaceful enough, I know, but don’t let appearances fool you. This was taken from atop Airport Road, a prime spot for sunset-seeking tourists. Yep, just me and about 150 of my closest friends (and their tripods), all jockeying for position as the late afternoon made its lovely transition into evening. And while Sedona is a unique and spectacularly beautiful place, I’ll admit that I couldn’t wait to get out of there. The high prices ($12.50 for a veggie burrito at lunchtime!), indifferent service, heavy traffic, and just the general crush of humanity I found there left me longing almost immediately for the less-beaten path.

I was so overwhelmed while visiting the Gold King Mine and Ghost Town just outside of Jerome, Arizona, and time was so short, that a return trip now seems inevitable. Not only is the ghost town that was once Haynes, Arizona authentic and remarkably evocative, there is an enormous amount of automotive and mechanical eye candy to take in as well. The scores of vintage cars and trucks, as well as an abundance of old mining and farm equipment from all over the country, could keep any shutterbug happy for hours on end.

One of the highlights of my week in Arizona was without a doubt the afternoon I spent exploring the Gold King Mine and Ghost Town just outside of Jerome. Originally the site of Haynes, Arizona, a gold-mining town established in the late 1800s, this funky and refreshingly non-commercial outdoor museum gives visitors a surprisingly authentic look at what life there must have been like more than a century ago. Even better, it’s one of the coolest junkyards ever, the final resting place of countless antique cars and trucks.

My six-hour drive from Palm Desert to Williams, Arizona (Gateway to the Grand Canyon) ended up taking more than nine hours when all was said and done. I mean, what choice did I have but to stop for all of the vintage Americana I found along the way? I spotted this old dilapidated motel sign (minus the motel) just outside of Seligman, AZ.

Another look at the beautiful Grand Canyon. Seeing it in person for the first time was a truly remarkable experience that, for me, more than lived up to the hype. My only regret is that it was overcast when I was there and the light less than inspiring. I’m ready for a return trip!

Just because I live in an idyllic mountain paradise doesn’t mean I don’t crave a change of scenery every now and again. I had, in fact, been suffering from a protracted case of wanderlust when I finally set out last week on a rather spontaneous solo road trip across the desolate high desert of Southern California and on into Northern Arizona. My first stop, the Grand Canyon. I’ll be sharing more photos from my adventure in the coming days. Until then, wishing everyone out there a lovely weekend!
